Otres Beach Protected from over-development
The National Committee on Management and Development has halted construction along Sihanoukville’s Otres Beach and also announced that some existing buildings will be demolished.
The news comes as the Royal Group's proposed construction of a port on Otres Beach (to support development on Koh Rong) was abruptly halted this week, under order of the government.
According to Neb Samuth, Tourism General Director, in a recent Khmer Times report, Otres Beach has been selected by the ministry as a model case for ensuring that bays and beaches remain environmentally friendly.
This protection is being implemented in order to encourage more domestic and international tourists to the coast of Sihanoukville and its islands. Samuth went on to say that a “Coastal Master Plan” is likely to get approval from the Ministry of Tourism and other government ministries in the middle of this year.
