Sihanoukville is set to receive a boost in its efforts to maintain a clean environment with the upcoming opening of a new wastewater treatment plant. The third wastewater treatment plant, worth over 20 million US dollars, is expected to be operated by X-Water Technology, the developer of the plant.
The government-licensed wastewater treatment plant will play a crucial role in treating wastewater from the city, which has been causing harm to the environment by being discharged into the sea. The new plant will join the first and second treatment plants in Sihanoukville, each with a capacity of about 5000 and 7,200 cubic metres per day.
The third plant is designed to handle up to 20,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day, making it the largest of the three. The plants are expected to significantly reduce the amount of wastewater being released into the sea, thereby improving the quality of the water along the coast.
According to Long Dimanche, the deputy governor of Sihanoukville Provincial Hall, in the future, people living in Sihanoukville will be required to pay for the drainage of sewage from their homes.
The authorities are also planning to educate the public on the importance of environmental protection and encourage them to participate in conservation efforts. By doing so, it is hoped that the people of Sihanoukville will develop a greater sense of responsibility towards maintaining a cleaner city.
As a popular tourist destination, the new wastewater treatment plant will not only benefit the residents but also attract more tourists to the area. With the completion of the new plant, Sihanoukville's wastewater treatment capacity will increase, potentially improving the overall environment and contributing to a more sustainable tourism industry.
